If someone was visiting the city I'm from for the first time, the advice I'd actually give, before anything about food or sights, is about how to cross the street, which sounds almost comically basic but genuinely isn't. There's no real gap in traffic here most of the day — you're not waiting for the road to clear, because it mostly won't — so the advice is to walk at a slow, steady, predictable pace and let the traffic flow around you, rather than stopping and starting, which is actually the more dangerous option because drivers can't anticipate what you'll do next. It's useful precisely because it contradicts what most visitors' instincts tell them to do, which is to wait for a clear moment that, in a lot of areas, essentially never comes. The people who need it most are honestly anyone coming from a place with strict, rule-based traffic systems, where pedestrians are used to being given the right of way rather than having to negotiate it themselves in real time. Without it, what tends to go wrong is exactly the panicked, hesitant crossing — stopping halfway, suddenly reversing, that kind of unpredictable movement — which is far more likely to cause an accident than just committing to a steady walk would be. I've watched more than one visiting relative freeze in the middle of a road out of pure instinct, and it's honestly a bit alarming to witness, even knowing it usually works out fine.
