Describe a historical place you have been to

The place that stands out is the Imperial City in Hue, which I visited on a university trip about six years ago, mostly because a professor of ours was oddly obsessed with Nguyen dynasty architecture and insisted we go. We spent an entire day walking through it — the outer walls first, then the Thai Hoa Palace, where the emperors used to hold court, and eventually the smaller, half-ruined sections at the back that most tourists skip because they're not restored. That's actually the part I remember most: cracked tiles, walls stained by decades of rain, a few sections completely reclaimed by grass. It felt less like a monument and more like something that had genuinely lived through a lot, including the war, which left visible damage in places nobody had bothered to repair. Our professor kept stopping to point out details — a carved dragon, the layout of a particular courtyard — that I would have walked straight past otherwise. What I took away from it wasn't really historical facts, most of which I've since forgotten, but a kind of respect for how much can survive, imperfectly, if nobody actively destroys it. I'd been to plenty of restored, postcard-perfect heritage sites before that trip, and they never affected me the same way. There was something about seeing the place half-abandoned that made the history feel real rather than staged for visitors.
