Describe a skill you learned

The skill I'd like to talk about is touch-typing — typing without looking at the keyboard. It sounds unremarkable, but it took me almost eight months to reach a point where it was actually faster than what I'd been doing before. I started learning it because I noticed I was spending a lot of time at work producing written documents, and I'd always typed with two fingers, which was getting genuinely embarrassing by that point in my career. I found a free online programme and set myself a daily practice target of about fifteen minutes. The process was considerably more frustrating than I'd expected. For the first six weeks or so, I had to actively slow down to use the correct fingers, which meant my output actually got worse before it got better. There were several points where I nearly gave up, honestly. The plateau stage — where you can do it correctly but not yet quickly — goes on for much longer than the tutorial makes it sound. What made me persist was a fairly mundane reason: I'd already told colleagues I was learning it, and I didn't want to admit I'd stopped. Pride more than discipline, really. By the end I could type at roughly twice my original speed, which translated directly into being able to produce things faster. More than the practical benefit, though, what I took from the experience was a better understanding of how skill acquisition actually works — that the dip in performance early on isn't failure, it's just part of the process.
