Describe a wild animal that you would like to learn more about

The animal I'd most like to understand properly is the octopus. I got interested after watching a documentary in which one worked out how to unscrew a jar from the inside, which struck me as the sort of thing that shouldn't be possible for an invertebrate. What fascinates me is how alien their intelligence is. Most of their neurons aren't in the brain at all but distributed through the arms, so in a sense each arm does part of its own thinking. They solve problems, they appear to recognise individual people, and they change colour instantly despite being, as far as anyone can tell, colour-blind — which nobody has fully explained. The thing I'd really like to know is what it is like to be one. With a dog you can more or less imagine it; with an octopus the whole architecture is so different that I doubt we can. I'd also like to learn about how short their lives are — most species live only a year or two — because it seems almost unfair that something that clever gets so little time.
