Listening and communication skills

Mostly out of respect for the relationship rather than the topic. If my uncle spends twenty minutes explaining how he pruned his bonsai trees, I'm not really listening to the gardening; I'm showing him that he matters to me. There's a more calculating reason as well: in a workplace, people nod through a manager's long story because looking bored has a cost. I don't think that's dishonest, exactly. It's a small social courtesy, like saying a meal was nice. On the second question, I'd argue listening is the more valuable skill, partly because it's so much rarer. Good speakers get noticed, but it's the good listeners people actually go back to. A doctor who lets a patient finish the sentence often gets the detail that leads to the right diagnosis, and a salesperson who hears what the customer is worried about sells more than one who recites features. That said, the two skills aren't really rivals; the best speakers are persuasive precisely because they listened first and know what their audience cares about. As for technology, I do think it has damaged our listening, though not beyond repair. A phone lying face-up on the table splits our attention even when it's silent, and we've grown used to speeding up or skipping anything slow. Still, the enormous popularity of long podcasts suggests people can concentrate for hours when they choose to, so the ability is intact; it's the habit that has weakened.
