Model answer
I prefer studying alone, for two reasons. First, I control the pace: when I hit something I don't understand, I can stop and work through it for twenty minutes without worrying that I'm holding anyone back. In my statistics course last term, that's exactly what happened with regression — I needed a full afternoon on it, which would have been impossible in a group. Second, I'm easily distracted. Group sessions tend to drift into conversation, and I'd estimate we spent half of every meeting off topic. That said, I do use groups for review right before an exam, because explaining a concept out loud shows me quickly whether I actually understand it.

The professor described two strategies animals use to survive winter. The first is migration: animals leave the cold region entirely. The example given was Arctic terns, which fly thousands of kilometres to reach warmer feeding grounds, avoiding the problem rather than adapting to it. The second is hibernation, where the animal stays but lowers its metabolic rate dramatically. The professor mentioned ground squirrels, whose body temperature drops close to freezing and whose heart rate falls to a few beats per minute, allowing them to survive months on stored fat. So one strategy avoids the cold and the other endures it.
