During deep sleep, the brain replays the day's experiences at high speed, a process called memory consolidation. The hippocampus, which stores short-term memories, transfers information to the cortex for long-term storage. Studies show that people who sleep after learning retain significantly more than those who stay awake the same number of hours. Crucially, it is not total sleep time that matters most but the amount of slow-wave sleep, the deepest phase. This is why cramming the night before an exam is counterproductive: without adequate deep sleep, much of what was studied never gets consolidated, and recall under pressure suffers. While it is true that certain functions are lateralised — language processing tends to involve the left hemisphere, and spatial awareness the right — both sides work together on virtually every task. Brain imaging studies show that creative activities activate networks spread across both hemispheres, not just the right side. Similarly, logical reasoning engages areas on both sides. The myth likely arose from early studies on patients whose corpus callosum, the bundle of fibres connecting the two hemispheres, had been surgically severed to treat epilepsy. In healthy brains, however, information flows constantly between the two sides, and no individual relies predominantly on one hemisphere over the other.

The neuroscience of habits Habits form when repeated actions create strong neural pathways in a brain region called the basal ganglia. Once a habit is established, the brain shifts from active decision-making to an automatic routine, which uses less mental energy. This is why experienced drivers can navigate familiar routes without conscious thought. The habit loop consists of three stages: a cue triggers the behaviour, the behaviour is performed, and a reward reinforces the connection. Breaking a bad habit is difficult because the neural pathway does not disappear; it simply competes with newer pathways. Research suggests that the most effective strategy is not to suppress the old behaviour but to replace it with a new one that is triggered by the same cue and provides a similar reward.
