The skill I'd genuinely like to learn is swimming, properly this time — I can technically stay afloat and get from one end of a pool to the other, but it's ugly and exhausting, nothing like the effortless way some people move through water. I want to learn it mainly because I feel a bit embarrassed by the gap between how comfortable I am on land and how helpless I feel the moment I'm in anything deeper than my height, which becomes relevant more often than I'd like whenever friends suggest a beach trip or a boat. I'd want to learn it properly, with an actual instructor rather than trying to fix it myself, because I suspect the bad habits I picked up as a child are exactly the kind of thing that's hard to unlearn alone — you need someone watching your technique from outside. I looked into a few adult beginner classes near me recently, so it's not entirely hypothetical at this point, though I haven't actually signed up yet, which says something about how these plans usually go. In terms of how it would help me, it's less about any specific practical use and more about removing this one area of low-level anxiety that's been sitting there since childhood, quietly limiting what I'm willing to do on holiday. There's also, I'll admit, a bit of pride involved — I'd just like to finally be competent at something so many people take for granted.
