The achievement I'm most proud of is finishing a half marathon two years ago, which sounds ordinary until you know I couldn't run one kilometre when I started. How I achieved it was slowly and quite unglamorously. I followed a beginner plan for about five months — three runs a week, increasing the long run by roughly ten per cent each time. Nothing clever. The hard part wasn't the training, it was not skipping it on the days I didn't want to go, and there were a lot of those. It took five months from the first run to the race, but really it took longer, because I'd tried and quit twice before that. The difference the third time was that I told people. Once four colleagues knew I'd entered, not going became embarrassing, and embarrassment turned out to be more reliable than motivation. Why am I proud of it? Not because of the distance — plenty of people run much further. It's because it's the first thing I finished after publicly saying I would. Before that I had a pattern of starting things quietly so nobody would notice if I stopped. The medal is somewhere in a drawer, honestly. What I actually kept was the evidence that I can do a boring thing for five months, which has been more useful than the run itself.

Common traps for Vietnamese speakers

Thành tựu KHÔNG cần to.
