Describe a piece of music you love

The piece of music I'll describe is Diem Xua by Trinh Cong Son — a song most Vietnamese people know, so I should explain why it's mine specifically. I first heard it properly at my grandfather's funeral, when I was about twelve. It had obviously been playing in the background of my whole childhood, but that was the first time I actually listened to it. I listen to it now maybe once a month, usually alone and usually late. It's not a song I'd put on with friends around — it changes the room too much. Why do I love it? The melody is beautiful, but so are a lot of melodies. What makes this one different for me is the restraint. The lyrics are about loss and rain and time passing, which could easily be sentimental, and it isn't. Trinh Cong Son doesn't tell you how to feel about it. He describes rain on a leaf and leaves you to arrive at the rest yourself. I've heard maybe fifteen versions. Khanh Ly's is the one, I think, although I know people who'd argue for others and they're not wrong. The strange part is that it's become a happy song for me over the years, even though nothing about it is happy. I think that's what a song does when you've had it for twenty years — it collects your life rather than its own meaning.
