Why do young people often admire celebrities more than people they actually know? Mainly because celebrities are edited. You see the finished version — the achievement, not the fifteen years before it — so they look like proof that something is possible. The people you actually know come with all their ordinary difficulties visible. That said, I think it shifts with age; by thirty most people I know admire someone they've met. Do you think a teacher can influence a student more than a parent can? In a narrow way, yes. A teacher can change how a student sees a subject, or sees their own ability, and that's a specific and powerful thing. But parents shape the baseline — what counts as normal, what's worth arguing about. So a teacher can redirect, while a parent set the direction in the first place. Should schools teach students how to choose good role models? I'm doubtful about teaching it as a subject, because the moment it becomes a lesson, students resist it. What might work better is exposure — bringing in people with unglamorous careers who are genuinely good at what they do. That does the same job without announcing itself.
