The clearest example I can think of was a hike up a mountain near where I used to live, which meant getting up at half past three in the morning to reach the summit in time for sunrise — the guide who organised it was fairly insistent that if you weren't on the trail by four, you'd basically miss the entire point of going. I did it mainly because a friend who'd done it the year before wouldn't stop talking about it, and I think I also wanted to prove to myself I could actually manage that kind of physical effort, since I wasn't in great shape at the time. The climb itself took about three hours in near-total darkness, using headtorches, which was honestly a bit disorienting at first — you can't see how steep anything is, you just trust the person in front of you. How I felt for most of the walk up was fairly miserable, if I'm being completely honest, cold and out of breath and questioning the decision more than once. But then we got to the top maybe ten minutes before the sky actually started changing colour, and that shifted everything — there's something about watching a sunrise you've physically earned, rather than just happening to see one from a window, that makes it land differently. Was it worth it? Genuinely yes, though I'd be lying if I said I'd want to repeat the three-thirty alarm part of it again anytime soon.
