The surprise I want to talk about happened on my twenty-fifth birthday, when a group of close friends secretly organised a weekend trip to the coast without telling me anything beyond 'keep this Saturday free.' It was given to me collectively, really, by about six friends who'd apparently been planning it for weeks, coordinating time off work and splitting costs, all without me picking up on a single clue, which still slightly amazes me given how obviously bad most of them are at keeping secrets normally. It happened on the actual morning of my birthday — one of them just turned up at my flat with a bag already packed for me, having quietly asked my flatmate what I'd need, and drove me two hours to a small house they'd rented by the sea. I reacted, embarrassingly, by more or less refusing to believe it was real for the first ten minutes, convinced there had to be a catch or that I was misunderstanding the plan somehow, and then getting fairly emotional once it actually sank in that this had been arranged entirely for me. What's stayed with me isn't really the trip itself, nice as it was, but the amount of coordinated effort behind it, which is a strange thing to be moved by, but there's something about people quietly organising around you without any expectation of credit that hits differently than a gift you can just unwrap.
