The goal I want to talk about is becoming properly fluent in Japanese, to the point where I could comfortably live and work there for a year or two, not just get by as a tourist. I set this goal about eighteen months ago, after a trip to Osaka where I realised how much I was missing by only being able to order food and ask for directions — entire conversations happening around me that I couldn't take part in at all, which was oddly frustrating in a way I hadn't expected before the trip. What I'm actually doing about it is fairly unglamorous — an hour of study most mornings before work, a weekly online lesson with a tutor, and forcing myself to watch shows without subtitles even when I understand maybe half of what's being said, which is uncomfortable but apparently the only way this actually sticks. Progress has been slower than I'd like, if I'm honest, there are weeks where I feel like I've barely moved forward at all. It matters to me partly for practical reasons, more career options, a country I've genuinely fallen for, but mostly because learning a language properly, as an adult, feels like one of the few remaining challenges that forces you to be genuinely bad at something in public again, and I think that's oddly good for a person, however uncomfortable it is in the moment.
