Describe a rule you had to follow

A rule I had to follow for most of my teenage years was a curfew my parents set — I had to be home by nine on weeknights and by eleven at the latest on weekends, no real exceptions unless it had been cleared in advance. It applied basically everywhere outside the house, so it didn't matter whether I was at a friend's place, at the cinema, or just hanging around a café, the rule followed me rather than being tied to a location. It existed, as far as I understood it then, mostly out of safety concerns, since the streets near us weren't particularly well lit, and I think my parents had also just absorbed a general anxiety about teenagers being out late that wasn't necessarily specific to me. At the time I found it fairly humiliating, if I'm honest — being the one who had to leave a gathering early while everyone else stayed on, constantly checking the time instead of actually being present. Looking back on it now, though, I feel differently about it, partly because I've since worked with teenagers myself in a tutoring context and have a much better sense of how much can go wrong late at night for no particular reason. I still think the specific hour was a bit arbitrary, but the underlying instinct behind it makes a lot more sense to me now than it did at seventeen.
