I'll be honest about this one because I think most people's answer is a bit more complicated than they let on. I mainly use Instagram, and then a much smaller, less glamorous forum for people who restore old furniture, which is a hobby I got into a couple of years ago. Instagram I probably check more than I'd admit — realistically forty minutes or so scattered across the day, mostly in dead moments like queuing or waiting for the kettle, which sounds harmless until you add it all up over a week. The forum is different; I go there deliberately, maybe twice a week, to ask questions about a piece I'm working on or see how someone else fixed a problem I'm stuck on. I use the two for completely different things, really — Instagram is passive, half-attention scrolling, mostly other people's holidays and food, whereas the forum is closer to an actual resource I rely on. Whether it's time well spent depends entirely on which one you mean. The forum, without question, yes — I've learned things there I couldn't easily have learned elsewhere, and it's connected me to people with a genuinely niche interest that nobody around me shares. Instagram I'm far less convinced by; I don't think I've ever finished a session and felt like my time was well used, more that I drifted into it and drifted back out slightly emptier. I've been trying, with mixed success, to replace some of that scrolling time with the forum instead.
