The item I still wear fairly often is an old denim jacket that used to belong to my father, which he gave me when I moved out for university, half as a practical hand-me-down and half, I suspect, as a slightly sentimental gesture neither of us really acknowledged out loud at the time. I tend to wear it in that in-between weather, too warm for a proper coat but too cool for just a t-shirt, so it gets a lot of use in spring and early autumn specifically, thrown on over almost anything. Where I got it, as I said, was directly from him, rather than buying it myself, which I think changes how I feel about it compared to everything else in my wardrobe — it's got a small tear near one cuff that I've deliberately never bothered fixing, partly because it was already there when he gave it to me and fixing it feels like erasing part of its actual history. Why I like it goes well beyond how it looks, though I do think it's aged into something genuinely stylish rather than just old; it's more that putting it on feels like a small, low-key connection to him, especially now that we don't live in the same city and don't talk as often as either of us would probably like. It's a jacket, practically speaking, but it's doing a fair amount of quieter work beyond that.
