I'll describe a small bookshelf I built myself last winter, mostly because the flat I was in had an awkward alcove that no shop-bought furniture would ever fit properly. I used fairly basic materials — a few lengths of pine, some wood glue, screws, and a saw I borrowed from a neighbour since I didn't own the right tools myself — and I worked from a rough sketch rather than any proper plan, which in hindsight probably explains why it took longer than it should have. All told it took about three weekends, spread out because I kept discovering mistakes that needed fixing, like a shelf that wasn't quite level or a measurement I'd got wrong by a couple of centimetres that only became obvious once I tried to fit it into the actual gap. I felt a mixture of things about the result, honestly — pride, mostly, because it does genuinely fit the space and hold up a reasonable number of books without wobbling, but also a fair amount of amusement at how obviously handmade it looks up close, with slightly uneven joints that a professional carpenter would probably wince at. What I didn't expect was how much I'd become attached to it, precisely because of those flaws — it's not a piece of furniture I'd have bought, it's one I made, mistakes and all, and there's a kind of satisfaction in that which a perfectly made shop version would never have given me.
