I'll talk about a boy called Minh who lived two doors down from me when I was growing up, from about the time I was six until my family moved away when I was around twelve. We met more or less by accident, the way kids do — our mothers started talking over the fence one afternoon and within about a week we were inseparable, which is a strange kind of friendship because it wasn't really chosen, it was mostly just proximity and having nothing better to do most afternoons. We did the usual things — cycling around the block, climbing whatever tree in the neighbourhood hadn't been declared off-limits yet, building elaborate and completely pointless forts out of cardboard that never survived the rain. I remember him being far more reckless than me, always the one suggesting the slightly dangerous idea, and me being the one who'd go along with it while quietly hoping we wouldn't get caught. We lost touch almost entirely after I moved, the way childhood friendships often do without anyone deciding it on purpose — no falling out, just distance and different schools doing what distance and different schools do. We reconnected briefly a few years ago through social media, exchanged a few messages, agreed vaguely that we should meet up sometime, and then didn't, which I think about occasionally with a bit of guilt but not enough to actually fix it.
