I want to describe a time a complete stranger helped me when my car broke down on a fairly empty stretch of highway, late at night, coming back from a friend's wedding about two hours outside the city. I'd pulled over onto the hard shoulder after the engine started making an alarming noise, and I was standing there with my phone at about eight percent battery, not entirely sure what to do, when a man in a pickup truck pulled in behind me. He didn't just point me toward a garage or leave me a number — he actually got out, had a look under the bonnet with a torch from his own toolkit, and worked out that it was something relatively minor, a loose connection, that he was able to temporarily fix well enough to get me moving again. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes, and he refused any money for it, just said something like it happens to everyone eventually and drove off before I'd even properly thanked him. I felt an odd mixture of things afterward — relief obviously, but also a kind of embarrassment at how helpless I'd been, and mostly just genuine surprise that someone would stop for a stranger on a dark road for no benefit to themselves whatsoever. It's stuck with me since then as a fairly reliable counterexample whenever I catch myself becoming cynical about people in general.
