Describe a skill that took you a long time to learn

The skill I want to talk about is swimming, which embarrassingly took me until the age of twenty to learn properly. As a child I nearly drowned at a beach, and after that I refused to put my face in water for years. What finally changed things was a patient university friend who broke the skill into ridiculous, tiny steps — a whole week just standing in the shallow end breathing out through my nose. Progress was slow and often humiliating; children half my age were diving past me while I clung to the edge. It took about eight months before I could swim a full length, and I remember that first length better than any exam result I've ever had. The experience changed how I learn everything now: I assume the fear is the real obstacle, not the skill, and I look for teachers who are patient rather than brilliant.
