Helping others and community

I think cities change how helping works rather than killing it. In a village everyone helps because everyone is watched — refusing has a social price. In a city like mine, help has become more organised and more anonymous: people donate through apps, join volunteer groups for floods, give blood at drives — but they may not know their own neighbours' names. Whether that's worse is debatable. Organised help reaches further; a charity can feed a thousand people while a kind neighbour feeds one. But something is lost too, because help that comes from strangers doesn't build the daily trust that makes an area feel safe. The ideal is probably both layers working together, and interestingly, disasters tend to switch the neighbourly layer back on overnight.
