Describe a time when you encouraged someone to do something they did not want to do

I'd like to talk about persuading my younger cousin to sit an English speaking competition at her school. She had the ability — her pronunciation is better than mine — but she was convinced she would freeze in front of an audience, and she had already decided not to enter. I didn't argue with her about whether she was good enough, because that would have gone nowhere. Instead I asked her to practise once, to me, over a video call, with the agreement that she could pull out afterwards with no discussion. She did it, stumbled twice, and finished. Then I asked her to do it once more the next evening, which was noticeably better. By the fourth attempt she brought it up herself and asked when the deadline was. She entered, came third out of about thirty, and has since joined the school's debating club. What I took from it is that pushing people rarely works, but lowering the size of the first step almost always does. I never once told her she should enter — I only ever asked for the next small thing.
