I'd like to talk about an evening I spent with three old school friends in Da Nang last July. The four of us had been inseparable at high school, but after graduation we scattered: one went to Saigon, one to Japan, and I moved to Hanoi. That Saturday was the first time in three years that we were all back in our home town at once. We started at about six at a seafood place near My Khe Beach, the kind with plastic stools. We ordered grilled scallops, steamed clams with lemongrass and far too much squid, and the bill for four of us came to only about 600,000 dong. When Hieu complained that his knees hurt from sitting so low, Trang told him, "We're not old, the stools just got lower." That set the tone for the rest of the night. Just before nine we walked over to the Dragon Bridge, because at weekends the dragon's head breathes fire and then sprays water. We had all seen it dozens of times, yet we still pushed to the front like tourists, and got soaked. After that we ended up in a karaoke room, murdering the same ballads we used to sing at sixteen, until the staff politely asked us to leave at around one o'clock. What made it so enjoyable, I think, was how effortless it was. I had been a little nervous that we'd have nothing to say after so long. Instead, within ten minutes we were teasing each other exactly as before. It reminded me that some friendships don't need maintaining; you just pick them up where you left off.
