I'd like to talk about the men's football final of the SEA Games, which I watched live at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi in May 2022. It was Vietnam's under-23 team against Thailand, which is about the biggest rivalry in the region. I went with my father. He had queued for hours to get two tickets, and he treated them like gold. We left home at three for a seven o'clock kick-off, because the streets around the stadium were already a river of red shirts and flags. Our seats were high up behind one of the goals, among tens of thousands of people. For most of the match, to be honest, the football was tense rather than beautiful. Both sides were terrified of making a mistake, and at half-time my father muttered, "If this goes to penalties, my heart won't survive." Then, with less than ten minutes left, a cross came in from the left and Nham Manh Dung headed it into the net. I have never heard a noise like it. A stranger behind me lifted me off the ground, my father lost a sandal, and nobody around us sat down again until the final whistle. Vietnam won one-nil. I liked it for several reasons. Obviously the result helped, but what stays with me more is the atmosphere. On television you can't feel the stand shaking under your feet, or hear a whole stadium singing together. It was also the first time I'd seen my father, who is normally a very reserved man, hug complete strangers. It took us two hours to get home through the celebrations, and neither of us minded in the least.
