I'd like to talk about the General Sciences Library in Ho Chi Minh City, which is on Ly Tu Trong Street, right in the middle of District 1. It's a pale, rather elegant building from the early 1970s, with a patterned concrete screen across the front that keeps the sun out. I first went there in my second year of university, when the air conditioner in my rented room broke down in the hot season, and I've been going two or three times a month ever since, usually on Saturday mornings. A reader's card costs next to nothing, so it's about the cheapest cool place in the city. My routine hardly ever changes. I leave my bag in a locker, go up to the reading room, and take a seat by the window. The guard at the door always gives the same greeting, "Phones on silent, please," and he really means it. I study for three hours or so, and then reward myself by browsing the old newspapers. The reason I enjoy the place so much is the atmosphere. Outside there are thousands of motorbikes, and inside there are a few hundred people all concentrating in complete silence, which somehow makes me concentrate too. At home I check my phone every five minutes; there, I'd be too embarrassed. I also like the idea that it belongs to everybody. Students, retired teachers and the odd office worker escaping the heat all sit at the same long tables, and nobody is trying to sell you anything. In a city where almost every square metre is a shop, that feels like a small luxury.
