Cities, tourism and urban life

I'd say it comes down to character more than famous sights. Tourists want a city that feels unlike home, so an old quarter you can explore on foot, distinctive street food and a lively night scene count for more than another shopping mall. Hoi An is a good example: it has no skyscrapers or theme parks, yet people fly in for the lanterns, the tailors and a bowl of cao lau. Practical things matter too, such as safe streets and transport a foreigner can figure out. The downside is that popularity can spoil the very thing visitors came for. Rents rise as flats turn into holiday lets, so local families move out and the centre fills with souvenir shops selling identical magnets. Rubbish and noise increase, and residents start to feel like extras in someone else's holiday. Of course, I wouldn't want to exaggerate, because tourism also pays for restoration that a city could never otherwise afford, and it employs thousands of people who might have had to leave. The real issue is volume, not tourism itself. In the future, I expect popular cities to manage visitors much more actively. Some already charge entry fees or cap numbers at certain sites, and I think timed tickets booked through an app will become normal. I'd also guess that smaller, lesser-known cities will promote themselves harder as travellers tire of crowds. Spontaneous travel may suffer a little, but that seems a fair price.
