Happiness and well-being

If I had to pick one thing, I'd say it's feeling useful to a few people who matter to you. The happiest people I've come across aren't the ones with the most exciting lives; they tend to have a steady routine, work they are reasonably good at, and two or three relationships they can rely on. Pleasure matters, of course, but it fades fast, whereas being needed seems to hold up over decades. On money, I think it works up to a point and then stops. Below a certain income, money buys freedom from very real anxieties, such as whether you can afford a hospital bill, and anyone who claims that doesn't affect happiness has probably never been short of cash. Beyond that level, though, extra income mostly buys comparison. A person earning a comfortable salary can still feel poor if everyone in their circle has just bought a bigger flat. So I'd say wealth removes misery far more reliably than it adds joy. As for the future, I'm cautiously pessimistic. Living standards will almost certainly rise, yet we'll also be more aware than ever of how other people live, and constant comparison is the enemy of contentment. That said, I do see one hopeful sign: mental health is discussed far more openly than it was when my parents were young, so people who are struggling are more likely to get help. We may not be happier, but we might at least be less quietly unhappy.
