Wasting time and time management

I think it's usually because the wasteful activity is doing a hidden job. Take scrolling through short videos: nobody believes it's productive, but it's the easiest available way to switch off after a draining day, and it demands no decision at all. So telling people to stop rarely works unless they have something equally effortless to replace it with. Habit and social pressure matter as well; plenty of office workers sit through weekly meetings that everyone privately considers pointless, simply because nobody wants to be the first to say so. Whether young people waste more time than their parents did, I'm honestly not convinced. My father's generation spent whole evenings in front of whatever happened to be on television, which is hardly more noble than gaming. The real difference is that today's distractions are engineered to be endless. A TV programme finished and you went to bed, whereas a feed never runs out, so the same weakness now costs three hours instead of one. As for technology helping in the future, I'm sceptical, because the companies building time-management tools are often the same ones that profit from our attention. That said, there are signs of a genuine shift: screen-time limits are now built into most phones, and some people do use them. I'd expect the tools to get smarter, but I think they'll only ever help those who have already decided to change. An app can remind you to stop; it can't make you want to.
