Languages evolve over time through changes in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Historical linguists trace these shifts by comparing related languages and reconstructing ancestral forms, a method that has revealed surprising connections between languages spoken thousands of kilometres apart in different regions of the world.

Sign languages are complete natural languages with their own grammar and syntax, distinct from the spoken languages of the communities in which they develop. Contrary to popular belief, sign languages are not universal; American Sign Language and British Sign Language, for example, are mutually unintelligible.
