Artificial intelligence systems can now outperform humans in tasks ranging from image recognition to complex strategy games. However, these systems lack genuine understanding of the problems they solve, relying instead on statistical patterns extracted from vast datasets without any awareness of meaning or context.

Cybersecurity threats have grown more sophisticated as organisations store increasing amounts of sensitive data online. A single breach can expose millions of personal records, leading to financial losses, reputational damage, and legal consequences that may take years to fully resolve for the affected companies and individuals.

Autonomous vehicles use a combination of cameras, radar, and machine learning algorithms to navigate roads without human intervention. While the technology has made rapid progress in controlled environments, unpredictable situations such as construction zones and pedestrian behaviour continue to pose significant engineering challenges.

Software rarely fails all at once. It accumulates small compromises, each reasonable at the time, until the cost of adding a feature exceeds the cost of rebuilding the system, and teams discover the decision was made for them years earlier.

Encryption protects information by making it expensive to read rather than impossible. Every practical system rests on a calculation about how long an attacker would need, and that calculation shifts each time computers become faster or a new method is discovered.
