The immune system responds by producing antibodies and training specialised memory cells to recognise the invader. If the real pathogen later enters the body, these memory cells mount a rapid defence, often preventing infection entirely or significantly reducing its severity. The key advantage is that the person gains protection without suffering the disease itself. Smallpox was eradicated entirely through vaccination, and polio is close to the same fate. However, vaccine effectiveness varies: some provide lifelong immunity after a single dose, while others, like the influenza vaccine, must be updated annually because the virus mutates rapidly and last year's formulation may no longer match the circulating strains.

Antibiotic resistance: a growing threat Antibiotics transformed medicine in the twentieth century, turning previously fatal infections into minor inconveniences. But bacteria evolve rapidly, and overuse of antibiotics has accelerated the development of resistant strains. When antibiotics are prescribed unnecessarily — for viral infections they cannot treat, for example — or when patients stop taking them before completing the full course, surviving bacteria are those best equipped to resist the drug. These resistant bacteria multiply and spread. The agricultural sector compounds the problem: roughly seventy per cent of antibiotics sold globally are used in livestock, not to treat disease but to promote faster growth. This practice creates an enormous reservoir of resistant bacteria that can transfer to humans through food, water, and direct contact. Without effective antibiotics, routine surgeries and cancer treatments become far more dangerous because the risk of untreatable secondary infections rises dramatically.
