Circadian rhythms and modern life Every cell in the human body contains a molecular clock that follows a roughly twenty-four-hour cycle called a circadian rhythm. These internal clocks regulate sleep, hormone release, body temperature, and metabolism. The master clock, located in a brain region called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, synchronises all the others using light detected through the eyes. Before electric lighting, human circadian rhythms aligned naturally with sunrise and sunset. Modern life disrupts this alignment. Artificial light in the evening delays the release of melatonin, the hormone that signals sleep onset, shifting the body's schedule later. Screens are particularly problematic because they emit blue-wavelength light, which suppresses melatonin more than other colours. Chronic misalignment between the internal clock and the external schedule — common in shift workers — has been linked to increased rates of obesity, depression, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer.

The stages of sleep Sleep is not a single uniform state but a cycle of distinct stages that repeat roughly every ninety minutes throughout the night. The cycle begins with light sleep, during which the body relaxes and brain activity slows. This transitions into deep slow-wave sleep, the most physically restorative stage, when the body repairs tissue, strengthens the immune system, and clears metabolic waste from the brain. Finally, the sleeper enters REM sleep, characterised by rapid eye movements, vivid dreaming, and intense brain activity similar to waking. Memory consolidation occurs during both deep sleep and REM sleep, but they serve different functions: deep sleep consolidates factual knowledge, while REM sleep processes emotional experiences and integrates new information with existing memories. The proportion of these stages shifts across the night: deep sleep dominates the first half, REM sleep the second, which is why cutting sleep short primarily reduces dream time.

Why teenagers need more sleep During adolescence, the circadian clock shifts later, making teenagers biologically inclined to fall asleep later and wake later than children or adults. This is not laziness; it is a well-documented neurological change driven by puberty. Melatonin release begins roughly two hours later in teenagers than in adults, which means a teenager told to go to bed at ten o'clock may not feel sleepy until midnight. School start times, however, have not adjusted to match. Many secondary schools begin before eight in the morning, forcing students to attend classes during what their biology treats as the middle of the night. Research consistently shows that delaying school start times by even thirty to sixty minutes leads to better academic performance, fewer traffic accidents involving young drivers, and measurable improvements in mental health, including lower rates of depression and anxiety among students.
