The main cause is the replacement of natural surfaces — grass, trees, soil — with materials that absorb and retain heat: asphalt, concrete, and dark rooftops. These materials absorb solar energy during the day and release it slowly at night, keeping urban temperatures elevated even after sunset. Air conditioning compounds the problem by transferring heat from building interiors to the outside air. In large cities, the temperature difference between the centre and the rural fringe can reach five to ten degrees Celsius on a calm summer night. This affects energy consumption, air quality, and human health, particularly for elderly residents and those with respiratory conditions. Solutions include planting street trees, installing reflective or green roofs, and using lighter-coloured paving materials that absorb less heat.

Generalists like pigeons, sparrows, and starlings thrive in cities because they tolerate noise, eat diverse foods, and nest in buildings. Specialists, however, decline: woodland birds lose habitat, ground-nesting species are disturbed by pets and pedestrians, and migratory birds are disoriented by artificial light at night. Glass buildings pose a particular threat; hundreds of millions of birds die each year from window collisions because they cannot detect transparent or reflective surfaces. Despite these challenges, cities can support surprising biodiversity when green spaces are thoughtfully designed. Parks, community gardens, and even green roofs provide habitat corridors that allow birds to move through urban landscapes. Vertical farming in cities Vertical farming involves growing crops indoors in stacked layers, using artificial lighting and controlled environments instead of sunlight and soil. Proponents argue it addresses several problems at once: it brings food production closer to urban consumers, reducing transport emissions; it uses up to ninety-five per cent less water than conventional farming through closed-loop irrigation; and it eliminates the need for pesticides because the sealed environment keeps pests out. Crops can be grown year-round regardless of weather or season. However, critics point to one major weakness: energy cost. Running artificial lights to replace sunlight requires enormous amounts of electricity, and unless that electricity comes from renewable sources, the carbon savings from reduced transport are offset by higher production emissions. Currently, vertical farming is economically viable mainly for high-value, low-calorie crops like lettuce and herbs. Growing staple crops like wheat or rice vertically remains impractical because the energy cost per calorie is far too high.
