What are the main advantages of living in a large city? The density of opportunity, mainly. Not just jobs, but the concentration of healthcare, education, and people with different backgrounds — institutions that aren't viable at lower population densities. Cities are essentially exchange networks, and the more people and institutions in one place, the more productive those exchanges tend to be. Most innovation historically has happened in cities for exactly that reason. Why do so many young people move away from rural areas? Because the economic gap has widened, particularly in sectors young people are most likely to enter. Knowledge-economy work clusters in cities in a way that manufacturing didn't, so the pull is stronger now. There's a social dimension too — people in their twenties need access to a peer group, and cities provide that more reliably. Rural areas also tend to have thinner healthcare and education infrastructure for young families. How could cities be made more pleasant to live in? The evidence-backed interventions are reducing car dependency and increasing green space — both have documented effects on air quality, mental health, and the character of streets. But the binding constraint is affordable housing. A city with excellent parks and transport is still unpleasant if most people can't afford to live there, and cities tend to get the politics of housing wrong because the voters who show up are often the ones who benefit from it staying expensive. Do you think people in cities are more isolated than in rural areas? Not straightforwardly. City people know more people but often less deeply — lots of acquaintances, fewer genuine relationships. Rural residents have a more stable embedded community but fewer options within it. Which produces more isolation depends heavily on the individual and their circumstances. A newcomer to a large city can be very isolated; an established resident often has a rich social life. Should governments prioritise city infrastructure or rural development? Both matter, but political pressure concentrates resources in cities where the tax base is. The strongest case for rural investment is connectivity — good internet and transport links help rural areas function economically, which actually reduces the pressure on cities too. Treating it as an either/or understates how much the two problems feed each other.

Câu "should prioritise X or Y?" — "treating it as either/or understates how connected the problems are" là cách band 8 từ chối câu hỏi có khuôn mà nghe thông minh hơn là trốn tránh.
