Why are some people more willing to help strangers than others? Practice, partly. People raised in environments where helping was expected and visible are more likely to do it as adults. There's also the diffusion of responsibility effect — when many people could help, each feels less personally obligated, which is why a bystander on their own is statistically more likely to intervene than someone in a crowd. Proximity matters too: people help more when the need is immediate and visible rather than abstract. Should volunteering be part of the school curriculum? The intention is good but the evidence is mixed. The core problem is that compulsion undermines exactly what produces future volunteering — the sense of having freely chosen to help. Studies suggest students required to do community service actually volunteer less as adults than those who weren't. More effective is creating visible, low-friction opportunities and ensuring students understand what need they'd be addressing, rather than mandating participation. How can communities encourage people to help each other more? The structural approaches work better than the exhortational ones. Telling people to be more helpful rarely changes behaviour. What does: reducing friction — an organised pool of neighbours offering specific kinds of help works better than a vague appeal; creating regular occasions for informal contact so that helping becomes part of an existing relationship; and recognising local contribution publicly so it becomes a visible social norm. Do you think people are more or less generous than they used to be? Mixed evidence. Charitable giving as a share of income has held roughly steady in most countries. But the spontaneous informal help that stable communities once provided has probably declined as people have become more mobile and neighbours have become less embedded in each other's lives. Whether that's a net loss is complicated by how much of what informal networks once did is now handled by formal institutions. Is there a risk that people become too dependent on help from others? A theoretical one, but I think it's overstated. The assumption is that being helped weakens independence, but most research suggests the opposite — people with strong support networks tend to be more resilient and capable, because they have more resources to draw on when things go wrong. The genuine risk is institutional: welfare systems can be designed in ways that create perverse incentives. But that's a different problem from communities simply supporting each other.
