Why do people find natural places more relaxing than cities? Partly the absence of demands. In a city almost everything is designed to get your attention — signs, notifications, traffic you have to react to. A forest makes no requests of you. There's also the pace: things in nature change slowly enough that you can't rush them, and that resets something. Should governments spend money preserving historical sites, or building new ones? Preserving, on balance, because the choice isn't symmetrical — you can always build later, but a demolished site is gone permanently. That said, preservation can go too far. A city that preserves everything becomes a museum that young people leave, and that's its own kind of loss. Has tourism changed the places you know? Significantly, and in both directions. Some towns near me were economically dying and tourism reversed that. But the centres have become versions of themselves — the shops sell what visitors expect rather than what residents need. The honest answer is that tourism saved some of those places and hollowed them out at the same time.
