I'd like to talk about a time I helped a neighbour — an older man called Mr Phuong — who'd had a fall at home and couldn't manage some basic things for a few weeks while he was recovering. This happened about two years ago. He lives in the flat below mine and we'd been on friendly-but-not-close terms for a few years — we'd say hello, occasionally mention the weather, that sort of thing. One evening I heard something that sounded like a fall, knocked on his door to check, and found that he had in fact fallen and hurt his ankle. His family lived in another city and couldn't come immediately. It turned out he needed help with a few practical things — going to the pharmacy, carrying shopping, that kind of thing — so over the following two weeks I ended up doing those errands for him. What I did wasn't heroic in any real sense. It was mostly practical. I went to the pharmacy twice, picked up groceries three or four times, and once helped him to a medical appointment when the taxi hadn't shown up. The whole thing probably took six or seven hours of my time in total. What stayed with me afterwards was less the helpfulness and more what came after. We'd been neighbours for years without really knowing each other. After that we were on genuinely friendly terms — he'd invite me in for tea occasionally — which I suspect wouldn't have happened otherwise. The help turned out to be incidental. The connection was what mattered.

Common traps for Vietnamese speakers

Bám đúng 4 gạch: giúp ai → vì sao họ cần → bạn làm gì → cảm nhận sau đó. Phần 3 (bạn làm gì) cần chi tiết cụ thể — số lần, loại việc cụ thể — thay vì "I helped him a lot." Bài nào chỉ dừng ở "it made me happy" thường điểm thấp hơn.
