The teacher I want to talk about is Mr Hung, who taught me physics in grade eleven. He wasn't the most senior teacher at my school and he definitely wasn't the strictest. What made him different was that he assumed we were capable. That sounds small, but at my school most teachers assumed the opposite. Physics was the subject I was worst at. I'd more or less decided I wasn't a science person. In his very first lesson, he put a problem on the board that nobody could solve, and then he said something I still remember: nobody in this room can do this yet, including students who get tens in every test. The word "yet" was doing a lot of work there. The impact on me — actually, it went beyond physics. He stayed back after class maybe six or seven times to redo the same type of problem with me until I could do it alone. He never once suggested I was slow. By the end of the year I wasn't the best in the class, but I went from failing to around seven out of ten. More importantly, I stopped saying "I'm not a science person". That sentence had been an excuse, and he took it away from me. I use that lesson now whenever I'm learning something difficult, including English speaking.

Common traps for Vietnamese speakers

Câu "he was very kind and helpful" không giúp gì cả, vì ai cũng nói được. "He stayed back after class six or seven times to redo the same problem" thì chỉ bạn nói được.
