Describe a cake or dessert you received on a special occasion

I'd like to talk about a cake my flatmates made for my twenty-first birthday, which was, by any objective standard, a disaster. It sank in the middle, the icing was the wrong consistency and had run down one side, and they had written my name in chocolate but misjudged the spacing so the last two letters were squeezed in at the edge. None of them can cook. What I didn't know until afterwards was that this was the second attempt — the first one had burned, and they had gone out at nine at night to buy ingredients again. They brought it out with the lights off and a single candle, and everyone was slightly too aware of how bad it looked, which made it funnier. It tasted fine, actually, if a little dense. I've been given far more impressive cakes since then, from proper bakeries, and I couldn't tell you what any of them looked like. That one I remember exactly, down to the lopsided lettering, because the effort was so obviously disproportionate to my birthday.
