I'd like to talk about Mrs Vân, who lives directly above me on the fifth floor of an old apartment block in Thanh Xuân district, Hà Nội. I got to know her in a slightly awkward way: water kept dripping onto my balcony, I went upstairs to complain, and she opened the door holding a watering can and a bag of chillies as a peace offering. She grows an astonishing amount in very little space. Her balcony is perhaps four square metres, yet she's squeezed in spring onions, perilla, lemongrass, two tomato plants and a kumquat tree that's older than her grandson. Most of it sits in white polystyrene boxes she collects from the fish stall downstairs. On top of that she's taken over a corner of the shared rooftop, where she has a trellis of gourds that she fertilises with eggshells and used coffee grounds. I think she enjoys it for a few reasons. She grew up on a farm in Thái Bình and moved to the city when she got married, so having her hands in soil is partly homesickness. She's also suspicious of supermarket vegetables; she told me once, 'If I grow it myself, at least I know what's been sprayed on it, which is nothing.' But mostly, I suspect, it's social. Everyone on our staircase has been given herbs at some point, and that's how she keeps track of all of us. Thanks to her I now own a pot of mint that I've somehow kept alive for eight months, which is a personal record. She inspects it whenever she passes my door and usually tells me, quite cheerfully, that I'm overwatering it.
