The Speaking question bank is refreshed roughly three times a year, at the start of January, May and September. We update the forecast on those dates and keep previous sets online so you can compare.

The skill that comes to mind is swimming, which I picked up embarrassingly late — I was already nineteen. What made it hard wasn't the technique so much as the fear; I'd grown up avoiding deep water, so my instinct was to tense up the moment I couldn't touch the bottom. The city I'd most like to visit is Da Nang, on the central coast of Vietnam. I've been drawn to it for years, mostly because it sits right between the mountains and the sea, which is a combination you rarely get in one place. What appeals to me is how liveable it looks — wide streets, clean beaches, and a pace that feels much calmer than Ho Chi Minh City. If I went, I'd spend the first couple of days just walking along My Khe beach and eating my way through the local seafood, then head up to the Ba Na hills for a day. The reason it stays on my list is that it seems to strike a balance I can't find at home: a real city, but one where you can be in nature within twenty minutes.

I'd partly agree, though I think the picture is more complicated than it's usually made out to be. It's true that a lot of young people are more comfortable typing than talking — you see it when someone would rather send a message than make a two-minute phone call. But I'd argue the skill hasn't disappeared so much as shifted. The same person who freezes on a phone call might be very good at reading tone in writing, which is its own kind of social skill. Where I do think there's a real cost is in tolerance for awkward silence: online you can take thirty seconds to reply and nobody notices, whereas in person that pause feels enormous, and I think that's the muscle that's weakened.
